How Does Online Bingo Work?

helpIt’s true that bingo is one of the many online games which has seen its popularity surge over the past few years, but there’s a lot more to consider and understand when getting involved and actually playing it.

Participating in a game at a land-based bingo hall simply requires you to show up, buy tickets, and then sit and wait for numbers to be called out before marking them off. There is usually plenty of time to do this if you don’t have too many tickets.

The online method of gaming makes it even easier by bringing the game to you – in your living room, kitchen or even bathroom! – but things are a little different to the traditional way of doing things so it’s best to be prepared and know what to expect.

What Do I Need to Know?

Signing up to a bingo website is easy enough to do; you just need to head over to the site, find the registration form and fill it in.

Online Bingo Sign Up

However, choosing the right site – or sites if you prefer playing on more than one – to suit your own preferences can be tricky in the first instance, as there are so many available. Each of these sites will either utilise a bingo network and software from an established developer such as Microgaming or Virtue Fusion or they’ll build their own platform like Tombola have done, although the latter is much less common as most tend to use pre-existing networks.

For example, if you join up to a site that operates on the Virtue Fusion network (which is built and managed by Playtech), then you will be joined by other players from other bingo sites that also run on the same network. This is regardless of whether or not they’re all owned and operated by the same company. Therefore, you’ll be playing games of bingo on the site you signed up to against players from other bingo sites which run on the very same network.

Playing a Game

Online Bingo Lobby Schedule

You’ll find that the bingo platforms available online will offer a variety of different games to choose from. Each of these are usually provided via their own specific room, and while some sites may choose to only offer up 75-ball and 90-ball versions of the game, others will also incorporate a wider variation, adding 80-ball, 35-ball or 50-ball, or even a collection of all three, into their offerings. If you have a preference over the type of game you want to play, you will usually be able to see a schedule of when the next one will begin.

Buy Online Bingo Tickets

The schedule should provide you with information on the prize fund, any jackpot that is included, the starting time and the ticket price to participate. Buying in to a game will usually differ depending upon the room you’ve chosen to play in, so tickets can cost anywhere from 1p up to £1 and beyond, so it’s up to you to read the relevant information before joining a game. Once you’ve done so, you can purchase one or more tickets and wait for the game to start.

Online Bingo Calls

When it comes to playing the games, you need to be informed of how the balls are drawn. In land-based establishments you’re easily able to see what’s happening because there’s a a living bingo caller calling out each number. It’s handled somewhat differently in online platforms, with the balls being drawn and shown digitally – and at a much faster pace too.

eCOGRA LogoTo ensure fair gaming, bingo software is equipped with a random number generator (RNG). This is a computerised device which is built into the game designed to generate a sequence of numbers at random, therefore ensuring that each round of bingo is fair for all players. This is tested by the UKGC.

To give you even more peace of mind that the game you’re getting is fair, the bigger networks even run third-party testing on their RNG’s on a regular basis, with companies like eCOGRA, to prove that they are operating in the way they say they are (ie: completely randomly). So playing online gives you exactly the same chance of winning as sitting in front of a bingo caller picking the balls manually.

Marking off Your Numbers

Bingo Ticket Pre Game

Once the game begins, your tickets will be shown in front of you. The tickets will contain a series of numbers in a specific layout based on the variation of the game you’ve decided to play. You can’t choose the numbers for your bingo tickets though, as these are also generated randomly.

Bingo balls will then be generated by the RNG one at a time as explained above, with the numbers showing up on your computer screen as they’re ‘drawn’. The different variations of the game will have different rules when it comes to winners, as 90-ball bingo, for example, provides pay outs for a single line, two lines and a full house.

Online Bingo Ticket Being Marked Off

As the numbers are drawn they will automatically be marked off on your ticket – there’s no equivalent of a virtual dauber! Most software will rearrange your tickets based on the number of balls you need to win the next prize, so tickets that only need one number (‘one to go’ or ‘1tg’) will be at the top of the list so you can see them, and those that need two (‘two to go’ or ‘2tg’) will be below, and so on.

Winning A Prize

If you manage to mark off enough numbers to have win a prize, your bingo software will automatically claim the win for you and make it known. It’s the same as shouting, “BINGO!” in a hall, except not quite as vocal!

Online Bingo Winner

Prizes are awarded to the first person to complete the relevant requirement (line, full house etc..) – you don’t get anything for being the second person to achieve this, sadly. If two or more people win a prize on the same ball, then the winnings are split between the players equally.

If you’re participating in a game and there are multiple prizes, like in the 90-ball game, you are able to play for them all. So, if for example you manage to win the single line, that doesn’t mean you’re automatically excluded from the chance of winning the two lines and full house. You continue playing along with everyone else until winners are found for all endings.

There are also sometimes additional prizes for completing your card within a certain number of balls – this is known as a jackpot (or progressive jackpot if it increases with time) and some of them total hundreds of thousands of pounds. They’re hard to win though, so you’d better cross your fingers!

Finally there are community prizes – this is where everyone who bought a bingo ticket shares in the prize. These types of prize are often (but not always) found in conjunction with jackpots so that when one player wins it big, all of the other players who were in the game also get something out of it, albeit a much smaller piece of the pie than the big winner.
